Exercise Objectives<br />

After completing this exercise, you will be able to:<br />

• Perform a number of basic activities in the database backup and<br />

database maintenance environment.<br />

Business Example<br />

To protect the <strong>SAP</strong> system against data loss if an error occurs, the<br />

administrator regularly performs backups.<br />

Task Back Up the Contents of the Database<br />

Transaction DB13 is available with appropriate functions for every<br />

database supported by <strong>SAP</strong>. For the <strong>SAP</strong> DB database, <strong>SAP</strong> Note 431508<br />

was taken into account in the preparation of this training course.<br />

Caution: The runtime estimates in the exercises apply only for the<br />

training systems used here. In production systems, the runtimes<br />

may be much higher.<br />

Performabackupofthedatafilesandalogbackup.<br />

1. Display an overview of the utilized backup media. If you have<br />

performed a successful backup, what must you then consider before<br />

you can start the next backup (Hint: “Overwritable”).<br />

2. Schedule a Complete data backup with checkpoint in transaction DB13.<br />

Use the device FORDATA as the backup device. If the backup started<br />

successfully, the label in transaction for the backup run DB13 is yellow<br />

(process is running). The backup takes around 50 minutes.<br />

3. Schedule a Log Backup in transaction DB13. Use the device FORLOG<br />

as the backup device. The backup terminates immediately. Attempt<br />

todeterminethecauseofthiserrorusingthelogs.<br />
