Job Scheduling: Extending the Standard
Lesson Duration: 15 minutes
Lesson Overview
In this lesson, you learn about the resources with which you can extend
the standard functions for job scheduling.
Lesson Objectives
After completing this lesson, you will be able to:
• Describe how to extend job scheduling using Application
Programming Interfaces
Using the function modules in SAP systems, it is simple to create and
control even complex background scenarios, such as a job waiting for the
successful completion of multiple other jobs, scheduling periodic job
chains, and so on.
The interface XBP-API is also used by third party products. You can refer
the participants to the key term SAP “software partners” here.
Business Example
You want to extend the standard functions available for background
processing in the SAP system.
Extending the Standard
The job scheduling options described in the previous lessons do not cover
all possible requirements. You can implement more complex scenarios in
the following ways:
The SAP system has various internal function modules that support you
when defining your own job processes. These function modules are in the
function groups BTCH and BTC2. You can define any complex scenarios
with the help of these function modules.
SAP provides a set of interfaces that allow the connection of other system
management environments to the SAP Computing Center Management
System (CCMS):
• The eXternal Monitoring Interface API (XMI-API) interface logs the
activities of external users and programs.
• The eXternal interface for Background Processing (XBP-API) interface
allows the use of external job scheduling programs.
