ADM100 Lesson: Performing Data Archiving
You can call the Customizing settings by choosing the Customizing button
on the initial screen of transaction SARA (Archive Administration, menu
path Tools → Administration → Administration → Data Archiving).
In the general Customizing (Basis Customizing, switch to the transaction
FILE), you first define - if it does not already exist - a logical file path as
the global path for data archiving and assign a physical path to this logical
path. The logical path acts only as a placeholder for the physical path
created at runtime.
Hint: The physical path assigned to the logical path can be
maintained separately for each operating system utilized (such as
\ for Microsoft Windows NT). The
SAP system automatically identifies which path is actually used
at runtime.
You also maintain a logical file name here for naming the archive file for
the archiving of application data and assign it a physical file name that is
generated at runtime and used as the file name.
In the Basis Customizing (reached using transaction SARA, Customizing
pushbutton, Cross-Client File Names/Paths option), show in the Logical
File Path Definition area that the logical path ARCHIVE_GLOBAL_PATH
exists (or create it if it does not exist, and give it a descriptive short
description such as “Global path for data archiving”). In the Assignment
of Physical Paths to Logical Path subdirectory, show that, for the operating
system Windows NT this logical path is assigned the physical path
\ (double click the operating system
name to display this information), or maintain the corresponding entry for
the operating system on which your SAP system is running. The file name
isgeneratedatruntimebasedonotherCustomizing settings (see below).
In the Logical File Name Definition, Cross-Client folder, double click
the logical file name ARCHIVE_DATA_FILE to show
that the logical file nameARCHIVE_DATA_FILE is assigned the physical file
name____.ARCHIVE
, which is replaced at runtime (or maintain this entry correspondingly). In
the case of work items, is replaced by the application
component BC, by a sequence letter (or a digit), and
by the object to be archived WORKITEM. The F1 help for the
Physical file fieldisveryinformativeandshouldbeshowntothe
participants. You should also explain that the logical file is also assigned a
logical path, as illustrated by the following figure. Finally, move back
to the initial Customizing screen.
