External commands are host system commands or programs predefined in<br />

the <strong>SAP</strong> system by an administrator. They are protected by authorizations<br />

so that normal users can only schedule the commands for which the<br />

system administrator has assigned them the authorization. You can<br />

therefore provide functions outside the <strong>SAP</strong> system, at operating system<br />

level, for users of the <strong>SAP</strong> system.<br />

External programs are unrestricted commands that are neither predefined<br />

nor restricted by authorizations. A user with administration authorization<br />

can enter any external program in a job step. No <strong>SAP</strong> authorization check<br />

is performed before the execution of the command. External programs<br />

provide an administrator (user with administration authorization for<br />

external commands (Authorization object S_RZL_ADM: Background<br />

Processing: Background Administrator)) the flexibility to run any<br />

required host system command in the <strong>SAP</strong> system without administrative<br />

preparation.<br />
