Fundamentals of Background Processing
Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
Lesson Overview
In this lesson, you will learn about the basics of background processing.
Lesson Objectives
After completing this lesson, you will be able to:
• Describe the uses of background processing
• Schedule and monitor jobs
Hint: What is “background processing” actually? You can use this
question as an introduction to the topic.
Background processing should essentially separate long-running or
periodic tasks from user interaction. Long-running tasks which would
occupy a work process for a long time in dialog can be sequentially
processed in the background without affecting the dialog performance. An
important prerequisite for achieving this goal is an appropriate sizing
of the system; that is, too many background work processes could end
up competing with dialog work processes for shared resources (main
memory, CPU).
Business Example
Reports to be run regularly and long-running programs are scheduled
as background jobs in the SAP system. The administrator schedules
background jobs and monitors the correct process of the system’s
background processing.
