user by a load of unnecessary options.
By default, the members of the Domain Admins group have permission to use all modules and functions
of the Univention Management Console.
The operation of Univention Management Console is described in the following chapters. After some
instructions on how to handle Univention Management Console and the diverse controlling elements and
structures, the individual modules and functions will be explained in detail.
5.2 Layout of the Web Interface
With its web interface, Univention Management Console offers an easy way of performing administrative
tasks from any client. The possibilities for the individual user depend to a large degree on which permis-
sions are defined for this user.
The following paragraphs comprise an illustrated description of the layout and operation of the user in-
terface of the Univention Management Console. Details relating to the functionalities of the individual
modules can be found in subsequent chapters.
5.2.1 Login Mask
The simplest way of accessing Univention Management Console is to enter the URL
https:///umc/ in the address field of a web browser. Replace by the client
name or by the IP address of the system, e. g. https://ucs-master.univention.local/umc/.
Under special circumstances, it might be necessary to access Univention Management Con-
sole via a secure connection. This can be the case if there haven’t been any SSL certifi-
cates created yet for this system. Insecure access is performed via the http address, e. g.
http://ucs-master.univention.local/umc/.
Attention:
In this case, passwords are transmitted in plain text across the network.
The login mask is displayed as the welcome page for the user (see Illustration 5.1). He can log in via
his username from the UCS domain and the appropriate password. Depending on the user’s authorisa-
tions, the subsequent screens displayed in the web browser might look slightly different from the below
screenshots.
The Administrator account is generally used for administrative accesses.
Also, the language of the user interface can be selected during login.
5.2.2 Overview
After successful login, and if sufficient permissions were assigned to the user, an overview of all available
modules will be displayed as shown in Illustration 5.2. The display will only include modules to which the
