The space for each partition on a system can be limited individually here. If the Filesystem quotas module is selected in the Overview tab, a page is shown at the beginning which is similar to the 5.6 figure. This shows a list of all the available partitions of a computer. In addition to the partition names and the mount point, information on the size and available space is also shown. Further information which is important for quota management can be found in the Quota column: The deactivated status means that no quota settings can be made on the partition at this time. Figure 5.6: List of partitions 5.3 Standard modules activated. On the other hand, if the activated status is shown in the column next to partitions, the quota has already been activated. To activate this support for one or more partitions subsequently, it must be selected and activated in the table. If the quota management on a partition is activated, it is possible to change to the Partition overview category via the partition name in the table. This view shows details on current quota settings on the selected partition. An example of this can be seen in Figure 5.7. The quota settings for individual users can be added, deleted or changed here. There is an input mask for each task. The values inputted limit the file quantities for each user on the selected partition. In general, such limitations are defined by two values: Soft limit When this limit is met, the user is warned that he has reached his quota limit. This value must be smaller than the hard limit so that the user still has the possibility of deleting files. Hard limit When this limit is reached the user can no longer write on the partition. For example, if this applies to the home directory it can lead to problems with log-ins. These two limit values can be specified in different units. Files The soft and hard limits for files limit the quantity of user files by imposing a limit on the number of files created. Blocks The limitation of blocks applies to the file quantity in respect of the total size of all the user’s files in a partition. The difference between the soft and hard limits should be selected large enough to allow users sufficient time to clean up and save files. 161
