9.7.1 Creating and modifying global home directories
Global home directories can be created in a number of ways:
9.7 Global home directories
• Via the user management of Univention Directory Manager (POSIX (Linux/UNIX) settings and Win-
dows settings)
• Via the Samba configuration
• Via the file /etc/fstab
In any case, the server used must provide a /home share. This is the case as standard when Create
home share was selected during the installation.
9.7.1.1 POSIX (Linux/UNIX) settings
The configuration of the POSIX (Linux/UNIX) settings is done in the Univention Directory Manager user
management on the POSIX (Linux/UNIX) tab. This setting must be configured separately for each user.
The file share on the server is stated under Home share, below which the home directory can be found.
This is usually /home. The directory below the share which will be used as the home directory must be
given under Home share path. This is usually the username.
On the clients, the Univention Configuration Registry variable homedir/mount is used to control whether
the mountable share is actually mounted. This variable is set to no for managed and mobile clients as
standard. If this variable is set to yes or does not exist, the stated share will automatically be mounted at
the user log-in to the client.
9.7.1.2 Windows settings
The configuration of Windows settings is performed in the Univention Directory Manager user man-
agement on the Windows tab. Here the network path to be used as the home directory, e.g.,
\\fileserver\smith, can be given in the Windows home path field. This setting must be performed
separately for each user.
The user profile continues to be saved on the Samba server used to log in. If the user profile is also
to be saved in a certain share, this should be entered in the Windows profile directory field, e.g.,
\\fileserver\smith\windows-profiles\WinXP.
9.7.1.3 Global configuration in Samba
If the Windows settings are to be set for all users, it is recommendable to do this directly in the Samba
configuration. In addition, the Univention Configuration Registry variable samba/homedirserver should
be set to the file server on all Samba log-in servers. For this, the server must be specified which hosts
the home directories. If the Windows user profiles are also to be saved centrally, this must be configured
using the Univention Configuration Registry variable samba/profileserver.
