2 Domain concept 2.4.2.2 Windows Vista The joining of domains is only possible with the Professional, Enterprise or Ultimate editions of Windows Vista. The basic configuration dialogue is found under Start ➞ Settings ➞ Control Panel ➞ System Change settings must be selected, the subsequent security request confirmed and Change clicked under Com- puter name, domain, and workgroup settings. The Domain option field must be ticked and the name of the Samba domain entered in the input field for the domain join. After clicking on the [OK] button, the Administrator must be entered in the input field Name and the password from uid=Administrator,cn=users, transferred to the Password input field. The process for joining the domain can then be started by clicking on [OK]. 2.4.2.3 Windows XP Professional The dialogue for joining domains can be reached by right clicking on the Desktop entry in the start menu. Properties ➞ Computer name ➞ Modify must be selected there. The Domain option field must be ticked and the name of the Samba domain entered in the input field for joining the domain. After clicking on the [OK] button, Administrator must be entered in the input field Name and the password from uid=Administrator,cn=users, transferred to the Password input field. The process for joining the domain can then be started by clicking on [OK]. 2.4.2.4 Windows 2000 Server The domain join can be initiated under Properties ➞ Network identification ➞ Properties in the menu shown when you right click on the Desktop icon The Domain option field must be ticked and the name of the Samba domain entered in the input field. After clicking on the [OK] button, the Administrator must be entered in the input field Name and the password from uid=Administrator,cn=users, transferred to the Password input field. By default this is the same as the password of the local user root on the DC master. The process for joining the domain can then be started by clicking on [OK]. 2.4.2.5 Windows NT 4.0 Workstation An input mask is reached via Start ➞ Settings ➞ System control ➞ Network ➞ Identification ➞ Modify in which the Domain must be ticked and the name of the Samba domain must be entered in the input field. If the computer was already entered in the LDAP directory with Univention Directory Manager and the Initialize password with hostname checkbox was ticked on the Machine account tab, the process for joining the domain can be begun by clicking the [OK] button. The password is changed when the domain is joined. (If the computer is to rejoin the domain, the password must be reset to the computer name by checking the Initialize password with hostname checkbox.) 22
2.4 Joining domains If the computer has not yet been entered in the LDAP directory, the Create machine account in domain checkbox must be ticked first, the name Administrator entered in the User name input field and the password from uid=Administrator,cn=users, entered in the Password input field. This is the same as the password of the local user root on the DC master. The process for joining the domain can then be started by clicking on [OK]. 2.4.3 Rotation of machine account passwords The passwords of the machine accounts of the server system roles are automatically changed on a three week rotation as standard. The Univention Configuration Registry variable server/password/interval can be used to input a different value in days. The old passwords are saved in the /etc/machine.secret.old file and the procedure is documented in the /var/log/univention/server_password_change.log file. 23
