Windows operating systems use so-called NetBIOS names when operating in networks. Similar to DNS in
TCP/IP networks, the Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) is used for resolving such NetBIOS names
into IP addresses. In addition, WINS provides information on the services of the hosts.
The WINS service can also be adopted by Samba. WINS data can also be replicated among several
systems. Information on setting up WINS replication can be found in the Univention Support database at
http://sdb.univention.de/1107
If only one WINS server is being used and this server should collapse, the WINS server can be activated
on another Samba server by inputting a few commands (see Chapter 8.4.2.1).
WINS is activated by setting the Univention Configuration Registry variable windows/wins-support
on the desired Samba server to yes. (Correspondingly, WINS is deactivated by emptying the variable or
setting it to no).
As standard, WINS support is activated on the PDC. If more than one Samba server is being used, other
servers can be assigned the FQDN or the IP address or the WINS server via the Univention Configuration
Registry variable windows/wins-server.
The Univention Configuration Registry variables are used for setting the Samba parameters wins sup-
port and wins server. On a Samba server where WINS is activated, there may be no WINS server
entered in the Samba configuration. This is why the value of the Univention Configuration Registry vari-
able windows/wins-server is only entered into the Samba configuration if windows/wins-support
is not set to yes.
If the value of windows/wins-support or windows/wins-server is changed, Samba has to be re-
started via Univention Management Console in order to make the changes valid.
The WINS server can be made known to the Windows clients via DHCP. To do this the WINS server must
be entered in the [NetBIOS] tab for the corresponding DHCP object in Univention Directory Manager or
connected with a container above the object using a DHCP-NetBIOS policy.
When migrating a Windows domain where the Samba-WINS server is using the same IP address as the
Windows-WINS server, there is no need to enter a new WINSServer on Windows clients which have no
DHCP. A virtual network interface on the Samba-WINS server which has the IP address of the Windows-
WINS server assigned, serves the same purpose.
8.4.2.1 Replacing a collapsed WINS server
The following steps must be taken to replace a collapsed WINS server.
