Directory mode Read, write, and access permissions for the share. Attention: Univention Directory Manager stores the set values for users, groups, and access rights in the LDAP directory, and makes sure that the directory exists and shared appropriately. Should the directory al- ready exist, then the values defined in the file system will be overwritten by the values taken from the LDAP directory. Changes in the shared directory, which were carried out directly in the file system, are not passed on to the LDAP directory, and can therefore not be displayed by Univention Directory Manager. If the shared object is edited within the LDAP directory, then the changes in the file system will be overwritten. Therefore, settings should be made and changed with Univention Directory Manager exclusively. ’Samba general’ tab Samba name The name of the share to be used by Samba (NetBIOS name). This is the name by which the directory is represented, for example, on Windows clients within the network environment. When adding a directory share, Univention Directory Manager automatically adopts the name entered in the Name (*) field of the General tab as the Samba name. Attention: The homes share plays a special role within Samba. This share is used for sharing the home directories of the users. This share is automatically converted to the user’s home directory. Samba therefore ignores the rights assigned in the share, and uses the rights of the respective home directory instead.

VFS Objects Virtual File System (VFS) modules are used in Samba for performing actions before an access to the file system of a share is made. A VFS module can be, for example, an anti-virus software which moves each infected file that is accessed within the share, to a quarantine area. VFS modules are documented in the official Samba HOWTO manual at http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-HOWTO-Collection/VFS.html. MSDFS Root A distributed file system makes it possible to map shares spanning several servers and paths to a virtual directory hierarchy. This mechanism can be utilised for distributing loads to several servers, or to outsource storage locations. It also represents an improved method for mapping logical structures. MSDFS means Microsoft Distributed File System, and represents the implementation of a distributed file system. Setting the MSDFS Root option indicates that the shared directory is a share which can be used for the MSDFS. References to other shares are only displayed in such an MSDFS root, elsewhere they are hidden. To be able to utilise the functions of a distributed file system, the Univention Configuration Registry variable samba/enable-msdfs has to be set to yes. Afterwards Samba has to be restarted.
