10 Basic System Services 10.13 Time synchronisation Asynchronous system times between individual hosts of a domain can be the source of a large number of errors: the reliability of log files is impaired; Kerberos operation is disrupted; the correct evaluation of the validity periods of passwords can be disturbed; etc. Usually the Domain Controller Master functions as the time server of a domain. With the Univention Configuration Registry variables timeserver, timeserver2 and timeserver3 external NTP servers can be included as time sources. Manual time synchronisation can be started by the command ntpdate. 236

Updates for UCS are provided as release and security updates and hotfixes. These can be retrieved from DVDs or so-called repository servers. These repository servers provide the systems of a UCS domain with software in the form of packages which can be downloaded by the UCS systems for installation. As of Version 2.2 of UCS the possibility has existed of installing releases updates, security updates, hotfixes and additional components from the online repository http://apt.univention.de. This negates the need for a local repository server in many UCS domains. Environments where there is no access to an external repository server available, for example, can still use a local repository server. These mechanisms for software maintenance only cover the UCS systems in a UCS domain. Windows systems are not currently supported, although there is the possibility of starting a script-based software installation within the scope of an installation using Univention Windows Installer.
