2.4.2 How to join domains with Windows clients
2.4 Joining domains
The procedure for joining a Windows system to a UCS domain made available via Samba is now described
for Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP Professional, Windows 2000 Server and Windows NT 4.0
Workstation. The process is similar for other Windows versions. For Windows 95/98/Me/XP Home Edition
only the authentication against a domain is possible; not the joining into a domain.
A Samba account can be created automatically for a computer in the LDAP directory when joining the do-
main - i.e., a Windows-type computer object - which only contains the computer name and the predefined,
primary group. The Univention Configuration Registry variable samba/defaultcontainer/computer
can be used to specify a container in which the computer is stored (the predefined value is
cn=computers,). If the computer object should be saved at another place in the LDAP direc-
tory, the Windows computer must be entered with Univention Directory Manager before the domain joining
(see also Chapter 8.4.4). Information concerning MAC and IP addresses, the network, DHCP or DNS can
be expanded on prior to or after joining the domain with Univention Directory Manager.
Then, following local log-in as an administrator, the instructions of the Windows version used should be
followed (see below).
Attention:
If the computer name is changed via Hostname, the computer must be restarted before the domain join
can go ahead. The computer name must match that entered via Univention Directory Manager in the
LDAP directory.
Joining the domain takes some time and the process must not be cancelled prematurely. After successful
joining a small window appears with the message Welcome to the domain . This should
be confirmed with [OK]. The computer must then be restarted for the changes to take effect.
Domain names must be limited to 15 characters as they are otherwise truncated at the Windows client and
this can lead to log-in errors.
2.4.2.1 Windows 7
The joining of domains is only possible with the Professional, Enterprise or Ultimate editions of Windows
7.
When using Windows 7 certain settings must be made in the Windows registry before joining the domain.
A corresponding REG file can be downloaded from http://sdb.univention.de/1102. The system
must then be restarted.
The basic configuration dialogue is found under Start ➞ Control Panel ➞ System and Security ➞ See
the name of this computer . Change settings must be selected and Change clicked under Computer
name, domain, and workgroup settings.
The Domain option field must be ticked and the name of the Samba domain entered in the input field for
the domain join. After clicking on the [OK] button, the Administrator must be entered in the input field
Name and the password from uid=Administrator,cn=users, transferred to the Password
input field. The process for joining the domain can then be started by clicking on [OK].
