16 Frequently asked questions
• the computer name must be replaced with the IP address or
• an external DNS server must be used which can resolve the computer name
• the server must be entered in the /etc/hosts file.
The /etc/hosts file is generated from several files under UCS. The server must thus be entered in a
customer-specific file below /etc/univention/templates/files/etc/hosts.d/.
Example:
The NFS share can be found on a server with the FQDN ucs-file-server.company.com and the IP ad-
dress 192.168.0.34. A /etc/univention/templates/files/etc/hosts.d/20-custom file with
the following contents must be created:
192.168.0.34 ucs-file-server.firma.com ucs-file-server
The new Univention Configuration Registry file must then be published and the configuration file rewritten
(see Chapter 14).
16.10 What does ”No DB server name found.” mean?
The following message may appear when installing software with the univention-install command:
Cannot find Service-Record of _pkgdb._tcp.
No DB-Server-Name found.
The message states that no DNS service record with the name _pkgdb._tcp has been found and the
computer thus does not know the name of the package status database server.
As standard, all UCS systems attempt to share their installation status with the software monitor. For
this reason, they search for the DNS service record of the package status database following software
installation. If the software monitor is not used, there is no corresponding DNS service record and the
message appears. By setting the Univention Configuration Registry variable pkgdb/scan to no, the the
affected computer can be configured to not send information to the software monitor. The DNS request is
then not run and the message will not be shown. There is no urgency in changing this setting as the failed
DNS request for the service record does not cause a notable time delay or any particular network load.
16.11 Computer name and network settings in Windows XP Prof.
The current network configuration can be displayed on a Windows computer via Start ➞ Run ➞ Open ➞
cmd ➞ [OK] ➞ ipconfig /all.
The MAC address is designated as Physical address in the display. Ensure that the individual parts of
the MAC address in Univention Directory Manager are saved separated by colons (“:”). MAC addresses
that are input separated by (“-”) will also later be shown with colons.
The DHCP activated output shows whether the IP address was retrieved over a DHCP server or entered
locally on the computer. The network configuration can be changed as follows:
