16.3 How does a user change his password?
16.3 How does a user change his password?
There are a number of ways for users to change their password. The new password must always comply
with the security policy. If this is not the case, this may result in different error messages depending on
the mechanism used. If you have problems changing your password, you should firstly check whether the
security requirements are complied with.
16.3.1 On a Linux workstation
If the user is logged on to a Linux workstation, he can open the program with which he can change his
password via K menu ➞ Control Center ➞ Security & Privacy ➞ Password & User Account ➞ Change
Password. The program requests the old password first and then the new password. If the new password
is longer than eight characters a warning is given, which can be confirmed by clicking on the [Use As Is]
button.
If the password does not comply with the security requirements, the message Your password has not
been changed appears together with an explanation of why the change failed.
The user can also change his password using kpasswd on the command line. More detailed error mes-
sages are given there. (see Chapter 16.5).
16.3.2 On a Windows workstation
If the user is logged on to a Windows workstation he can open the dialogue for changing his password
with ”Ctrl + Alt + Del”.
16.3.3 When logging on
If a user’s password is no longer valid and the user tries to log on to the domain, a window opens automat-
ically asking him to change his password. For setting the password expiry interval see Chapter 4.5.11.
16.3.4 Via Univention Directory Manager
The ucsUCRVldap/acl/user/password/change must be set to yes on the DC master for the user to be able
to change his password via Univention Directory Manager.
After logging on to Univention Directory Manager, the dialogue for changing a user password can be
opened by choosing Password in the left screen margin. The new password must be given identically in
the Password (*) and Password (retype) (*) fields.
16.4 How is the password for root changed?
Each UCS computer has a root user. Its password is changed locally on the computer using the passwd
command.
