computer on which the font server is operated must be entered for . 7100 is usually selected
when entering the port as this is the standard setting for the font server. For example, if a font
server is operated on port 7100 of the master.ucs.test computer, the variable can be set to the following
value:
xorg/fonts/server=tcp/master.ucs.local:7100
9.6 Home directories
Each user is allocated his own home directory. This directory is usually stored under /home/ and
contains amongst other things all program settings which have been changed by the user. As each user
has write permission for his home directory, this is normally also the place where his personal documents
can be saved.
There are a number of different descriptions for a user’s home directory:
• home directory
• /home/
• $HOME
• ~
• home
If an alternate path than /home/ is required for the home directory, this can be entered in the
Univention Directory Manager in the user object under UNIX home directory. This is, however, only
required and necessary in exceptional cases. The login shell to be used, by default /bin/bash, can also
be amended or deleted here.
9.6.1 Creation of new home directories
The home directories of new users do not need to be created manually. As soon as a user logs on, each
UCS system automatically checks whether a home directory already exists for this user. If this is not the
case, a home directory is created.
When creating a new home directory, the home directory configured for the user is created on the system
on which the log-in occurs. The univention-skel mechanism then creates specific, predefined files and
directories in this directory.
9.6.2 Modifying the default content of home directories
When creating a new home directory, univention-skel copies the contents of /etc/univention/skel/
into this home directory and changes the owner and file groups over to the newly created user. Sub folders
are created in the home directories as relative paths.
For already existing user directories, changes to the contents of /etc/univention/skel/ have the
following consequences:
