11.3.6.4 Information about installed packages
11.4 Software monitor
Information regarding the installed packages can be shown using the command dpkg. The run parameter
-l and the package name can be entered to show the version number of an installed package. Using
the run parameter -l without package names will result in the display of a list of all known packages.
Wildcards in package names can be used to limit the search to certain packages. Wildcards can be an
asterisk (’*’ - for no or many characters) or a question mark (’?’ - for exactly one character). It may be
necessary to escape the wildcard when using asterisks as these may otherwise be interpreted by the shell.
dpkg -l univention-config-registry
dpkg -l
dpkg -l univention-\*
dpkg with the run parameter -L and a package name can be used to discover which files are contained
in an installed package. No wildcards can be used with the run parameter -L.
dpkg -L univention-ldap-server
dpkg with the run parameter -S and a file name can be used to discover which package a file belongs
to. The search can take some time as it encompasses the complete databases of the installed packages.
Files that have been created by packages following installation cannot be assigned to a package by dpkg
-S.
dpkg -S /var/lib/univention-ldap/replog
Further information on the dpkg command can be found on the man page (man dpkg).
11.4 Software monitor
The software monitor is a database in which information is stored concerning the software packages
installed across the domain. This database offers an administrator an overview of which release and
package versions are installed in the domain and offers information for the step-by-step updating of a UCS
domain and for use in identifying problems.
UCS systems update their entries automatically when software is installed, uninstalled or updated.
The database can be set up by selecting the Software monitor component in the Univention Installer. As
standard, the component is only preselected on the domain controller master.
The system on which the database is operated is set up by the DNS service record _pkgdb._tcp during
installation of the packageunivention-pkgdb. If it is installed subsequently on other system roles, the
DNS service record
pkgdb tcp 0 0 5432
must be created manually. Further information can be found in the Chapter 4.5.9.4.
The software monitor’s web-based interface integrates in the Univention Management Console. (General
information on Univention Management Console can be found in Chapter 5.1) The following software
monitor functions can be used:
