multi-Hazard <strong>Emergency</strong> planning <strong>for</strong><br />

schools (g364)<br />

This 2-day course provides schools with the<br />

knowledge, skills, and tools needed to review, enhance,<br />

and sustain their all-hazard school <strong>Emergency</strong><br />

Operations Plan (EOP). This course explains how<br />

to utilize the National Incident <strong>Management</strong> System<br />

(NIMS) as the foundation <strong>for</strong> planning and building<br />

partnerships with outside agencies such as police,<br />

fire, and emergency management. In addition, this<br />

course will provide participants with opportunities<br />

to exercise their school EOP using Homeland<br />

Security Exercise and Evaluation Program (HSEEP)<br />

guidelines as well as guidelines on how to sustain<br />

their school EOP through action planning sessions.<br />

Selection Criteria: Principals, vice principals, risk<br />

managers, School Board members, school safety<br />

coordinators, transportation coordinators, food service<br />

coordinators, facility managers/building engineers,<br />

nurses, counselors, and local first responders.<br />

Course Length: 16 hours<br />

Disasters (g366)<br />

This course enables participants to improve their<br />

community’s mitigation and <strong>Emergency</strong> Operations<br />

Plan specifically regarding the needs of children.<br />

The course will provide participants with the<br />

in<strong>for</strong>mation needed to address the unique needs of<br />

children prior to, during, and following disasters.<br />

It will also provide them guidance and direction<br />

on how to <strong>for</strong>m coalitions and how to become<br />

advocates <strong>for</strong> the unique needs of children in all<br />

aspects of emergency management.<br />

After completing this course, participants will be<br />

able to:<br />

• Articulate the importance of providing <strong>for</strong> the<br />

needs of children in disasters in their community’s<br />

current emergency management plan.<br />

• Explain what is required to keep children safe in<br />

emergencies and why those needs are unique.<br />

• Explain the assumptions, concept of<br />

operations, and organization and assignment of<br />

responsibilities that address the unique needs of<br />

children prior to, during, and following disasters.<br />

• Explain the planning components necessary to<br />

address the unique needs of children prior to,<br />

during, and following disasters.<br />

• Create an annex to a community’s <strong>Emergency</strong><br />

Operations Plan addressing the unique needs of<br />

children in disasters.<br />

• Identify stakeholders and organizations that can<br />

assist in preparing <strong>for</strong> the needs of children in<br />

disasters.<br />

• Initiate steps to <strong>for</strong>m coalitions and build teams<br />

that have a stake in keeping children safe in<br />

disasters.<br />

Selection Criteria: The target audience <strong>for</strong> this course<br />

is local and State emergency managers and planners,<br />

child services agencies, NGOs, child care providers,<br />

schools, and faith-based organizations.<br />

mitigation <strong>for</strong> <strong>Emergency</strong> managers<br />

(g393)<br />

This course is designed to train emergency<br />

managers and other interested individuals who<br />

have no specialized technical background, but who<br />

can support mitigation ef<strong>for</strong>ts as advocates. The<br />

course provides activities and exercises that build<br />

the participants’ abilities to: per<strong>for</strong>m the tasks and<br />

responsibilities of the emergency manager’s role;<br />

create long-term strategies <strong>for</strong> disaster-resistant<br />

communities; identify local mitigation opportunities;<br />

select mitigation solutions to hazard risk problems;<br />

and find resources to carry out mitigation activities<br />

in a post-disaster environment.<br />

Selection Criteria: Tribal and local government officials,<br />

emergency managers, community leaders in such<br />

ef<strong>for</strong>ts as voluntary organizations, businesses and<br />

industries, and other emergency service personnel.<br />

Prerequisites:<br />

Required: Completion of IS 393.a, Introduction to<br />

Hazard Mitigation.<br />
