This 2-day course is designed to train participants<br />

on FEMA’s Coastal Construction Manual. This manual is<br />

the primary, state-of-the-art reference <strong>for</strong> planning,<br />

designing, and constructing residential structures in<br />

the various coastal environments.<br />

Selection Criteria: The target audience is engineers,<br />

architects, and building code officials. Floodplain<br />

management, hazard mitigation, planning, and<br />

building officials with building science knowledge<br />

also may apply.<br />

benefit-cost analysis: Entry-level<br />

training (g278)<br />

This 2-day course is designed as an introduction<br />

to the fundamental concepts of Benefit-Cost (BC)<br />

analysis. Participants will learn how to obtain BC<br />

data and conduct analyses using the basic versions of<br />

the riverine and Coastal A-zone software modules.<br />

This course will not teach how to conduct level-two<br />

BC analyses.<br />

Selection Criteria: The target audience is Federal and<br />

State hazard mitigation officials. Other personnel<br />

involved in conducting BC analyses also may apply.<br />

Prerequisites:<br />

Required: Participants should have some prior<br />

knowledge of mathematics (basic algebra) and<br />

computers (Windows and spreadsheet programs).<br />

Recommended: Familiarity with basic flood<br />

mitigation terminology is suggested.<br />

retrofitting flood-prone residential<br />

buildings (g279)<br />

This 2-day course is designed to provide engineering<br />

guidance on retrofitting existing one- to fourfamily<br />

residential structures situated in flood-prone<br />

areas. Subjects covered include an introduction<br />

to retrofitting, regulatory framework, controlling<br />

parameters, building assessment, and design<br />

practices. There is also a 1 hour unit on economics<br />

and a final exam.<br />

Selection Criteria: This course is intended <strong>for</strong> engineers,<br />

architects, and building code officials. Floodplain<br />

management, hazard mitigation, planning, zoning,<br />

and public works officials with engineering,<br />

architectural, or building science knowledge are also<br />

part of the target audience.<br />

flood Insurance <strong>for</strong> the local<br />

floodplain manager (g282.1)<br />

This course is designed to familiarize participants<br />

with the flood insurance aspects of the National<br />

Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). The basics of<br />

flood insurance backed by the NFIP, including<br />

NFIP coverage, rating, NFIP policy in<strong>for</strong>mation,<br />

rate and rule changes, and opportunities <strong>for</strong> flood<br />

insurance outreach, will be discussed and reviewed.<br />

Interactive exercises and in-depth discussions will<br />

aid participants in learning this in<strong>for</strong>mation.<br />

Selection Criteria: This course is designed <strong>for</strong> floodplain<br />

managers with at least 2 years of floodplain<br />

management experience or who have the Certified<br />

Floodplain Manager (CFM) credential.<br />

Hydrology and Hydraulics <strong>for</strong> the<br />

floodplain manager (g282.2)<br />

This course is designed to familiarize participants<br />

with the hydrology and hydraulics aspects of the<br />

Flood Insurance Studies (FISs) prepared under the<br />

National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). The basics<br />

of both hydrology and hydraulics are discussed and<br />

the fundamentals of the FIS and Flood Insurance<br />

Rate Map are discussed. The flood profiles, regulatory<br />

floodways, special considerations in the mapping<br />

process, and FIS interpretation are also discussed.<br />

Interactive exercises and in-depth discussions will<br />

aid participants in learning this in<strong>for</strong>mation.<br />

Selection Criteria: This course is designed <strong>for</strong> floodplain<br />

managers with at least 2 years of floodplain<br />

management experience or who have the Certified<br />

Floodplain Manager (CFM) credential.
