This Independent Study course is <strong>for</strong> farmers,<br />

extension agents, emergency managers, and others<br />

who have interests in the livestock industry. It<br />

describes the various hazards that animals can face<br />

and how to mitigate <strong>for</strong> them, as well as how to<br />

respond to an actual disaster. The livestock industry<br />

is a multi-billion dollar business that provides<br />

food <strong>for</strong> the American people as well as <strong>for</strong> those<br />

overseas. It is important to ensure our livestock are<br />

safe from hazards and will not suffer from the effects<br />

of hazards. This course can be downloaded from<br />

the Independent Study web site and the test can be<br />

completed and submitted online.<br />

This Independent Study course introduces the basics<br />

of emergency management exercises. It also builds<br />

a foundation <strong>for</strong> subsequent exercise <strong>courses</strong> which<br />

Exercise and Evaluation Program (HSEPP) and the<br />

National Standard Exercise Curriculum (NSEC). IS<br />

120.a, An Introduction to Exercises, replaces IS 120, An<br />

Orientation to Community Disaster Exercises. At the end of<br />

this course, participants will be able to:<br />

• Identify the five phases of the exercise process.<br />

• Distinguish the tasks necessary to complete each<br />

phase of the exercise process.<br />

• Understand how exercises complete the<br />

emergency preparedness cycle.<br />

• Comprehend the role of exercises in the testing<br />

of facilities, equipment, and personnel in a<br />

per<strong>for</strong>mance-based environment.<br />

• Recognize how exercises prepare communities to<br />

respond to and recover from major emergencies.<br />

Exercise Evaluation and Improvement<br />

planning (Is 130)<br />

This Independent Study course is a new offering that<br />

introduces the basics of emergency management<br />

exercise evaluation and improvement planning. It<br />

also provides the foundation <strong>for</strong> exercise evaluation<br />

concepts and practices as identified in the Homeland<br />

Security Exercise and Evaluation Program (HSEEP). At<br />

the end of this course, participants will be able to:<br />

• Understand the exercise, evaluation, and<br />

improvement planning steps.<br />

• Comprehend the process of designing and<br />

developing exercise evaluation criteria.<br />

• Identify the necessary tasks in conducting an<br />

exercise evaluation.<br />

• Understand methods of analyzing exercise data.<br />

• Identify the steps necessary to prepare an After-<br />

Action Report (AAR) and conduct an After-<br />

Action Conference (AAC).<br />

Prerequisites:<br />

Required: Individuals who wish to enroll in IS 130,<br />

Exercise Evaluation and Improvement Planning, must complete<br />

IS 120.a, An Introduction to Exercises.<br />
