The <strong>Emergency</strong> <strong>Management</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>’s (EMI)<br />

Distance Learning Branch offers the Independent<br />

Study Program. This is a distance learning program<br />

which offers training, free of charge, to the Nation’s<br />

emergency management network and the general<br />

public. It serves as both an alternative means to<br />

deliver valuable training to the professional and<br />

volunteer emergency management community,<br />

and an opportunity to improve public awareness<br />

and promote disaster preparedness nationally. The<br />

ISP offers more than 100 training <strong>courses</strong> via the<br />

training site: http://training.fema.gov/.<br />

program Eligibility<br />

The program is open to all U.S. citizens with a valid<br />

U.S. deliverable postal address including Army Post<br />

Office (APO) and Fleet Post Office (FPO) addresses.<br />

At the present time, most of the ISP course materials<br />

are available <strong>for</strong> download free of charge from our<br />

web site.<br />

How to get started<br />

The fastest way to begin taking <strong>courses</strong> is to visit our<br />

web site. You can learn about each course, download<br />

materials, and take <strong>courses</strong> interactively. Just follow<br />

these easy steps:<br />

1. Go to our web site at http://training.fema.gov/<br />

2. Click on FEMA Independent Study.<br />

3. Click on ISP Course List.<br />

4. Select your course of interest.<br />

Once you have studied the training material, you can<br />

submit your final exam, all from the convenience of<br />

your home or office. Upon successful exam completion,<br />

you will receive an e-mail within 1 business day that<br />

confirms your transcript has been updated and a link<br />

to print your electronic certificate.<br />

Whether you download the materials or participate<br />

interactively, you will submit the final exam in the<br />

same manner.<br />

1. Go to our web site at http://training.fema.gov/<br />

2. Click on FEMA Independent Study.<br />

3. Click on ISP Course List.<br />

4. Select your course of interest.<br />

5. Click “Take Final Exam”.<br />

We will score your test and send you a response via<br />

e-mail usually within 1 business day. If you score a<br />

75 percent or higher, your e-mail will contain a link<br />

to access and print your certificate of completion.<br />

The EMI Independent Study program offers group<br />

training <strong>for</strong> some but not all of the Independent<br />

Study <strong>courses</strong>.<br />

2. Click on FEMA Independent Study.<br />

3. Click on ISP Course List.<br />

4. Select a course of interest. If there is an option<br />

available <strong>for</strong> group training, there will be a<br />

“Downloads <strong>for</strong> Classroom” option.<br />

5. Click on Downloads <strong>for</strong> Classroom <strong>for</strong> details.<br />

Earn college credit<br />

Through the regional accreditation agencies, it is<br />

possible to earn transferable acad<strong>emi</strong>c credit <strong>for</strong><br />

completion of Independent Study <strong>courses</strong>. Frederick<br />

Community College has assumed responsibility <strong>for</strong><br />

the evaluation of our Independent Study <strong>courses</strong>.<br />

Courses meeting their acad<strong>emi</strong>c standards become<br />

eligible <strong>for</strong> lower-division acad<strong>emi</strong>c credit. To apply<br />

<strong>for</strong> college credit, you must successfully complete a<br />

course that is eligible <strong>for</strong> college credit. You can then<br />

submit an application with a fee to receive a personal<br />

copy of your college transcript. Two official copies
