Introduction to community Emergency
response team (cErt) (Is 317)
The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)
Program educates ordinary people about disaster
preparedness and weapons of mass destruction. The
CERT Program trains participants in basic disaster
response skills, such as fire safety, light search and
rescue, and disaster medical operations. With proper
CERT training, participants can help protect family,
neighbors, and co-workers if a disaster occurs
After completing this course, participants should be
able to:
• Identify key concepts that form the foundation
for CERT operations.
• Identify principles and guidelines for CERT
activities.
The purpose of this course is to help participants
prepare for the classroom-based CERT Basic Training
course that may be available in their community. This
web-based training (WBT) includes many practices
useful for dealing with emergencies that may occur in
non-disaster situations. The classroom-based training
(CBT) includes many additional skills and protocols
that can be learned through demonstration and
hands-on practice in the classroom. Once participants
successfully complete the CBT, they will be actual CERT
members and will be trained to deal with emergencies
that may occur in real disaster situations.
