Another method used is to ask members <strong>of</strong> a farmer group in each village to select their 3 best varieties<br />

based on their own composite <strong>of</strong> preferred traits criteria. There is normally a lot <strong>of</strong> debate among group<br />

members in coming up with the 3 <strong>and</strong> in deciding which <strong>of</strong> the three is ranked the first. The number<br />

<strong>of</strong> times a given variety is selected as the most preferred is used to rank the varieties. Again, using this<br />

criterion, ICGV-SM 99555 <strong>and</strong> ICGV-SM 99557 took the top spot, followed by Pendo (Table 3-6). The<br />

fact that these two different methodologies came up with the same varieties is indicative <strong>of</strong> their farmer<br />

appeal.<br />
