on Charles of Anjou, w^ho accepted <strong>the</strong> donation.<br />

Clement IV. succeeding Urban, ratified <strong>the</strong><br />

deed of his predecessor ; <strong>and</strong> in 1 266^ Charles<br />

was crowned King of Sicily, on condition that he<br />

should pay every year a stipulated tribute to that<br />

Pope <strong>and</strong> his successors.<br />

Charles, having defeated<br />

<strong>and</strong> killed his rival, took possession of his new<br />

dominions, <strong>and</strong> was, <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pope, declared Lieutenant-general<br />

of Arragon to dispossess Charles ;<br />

<strong>the</strong> cruel massacre of <strong>the</strong> French on<br />

Easter-eve, known <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> name of <strong>the</strong> Sicilian<br />

vespers.<br />

But <strong>the</strong> succeeding Pope opposed <strong>the</strong><br />

King of Arragon, forbade him to assume <strong>the</strong><br />

title of king, deprived him of his dominions,<br />

<strong>and</strong> put him under an<br />
