had denied his Lord thrice Peter had been<br />

more forward than <strong>the</strong> rest in his professions of<br />

love to Christ ; <strong>and</strong> his sin had been proportioned<br />

to his presumption. Our Lord <strong>the</strong>refore<br />

reproves him indirectly, <strong>by</strong> inquiring<br />

about <strong>the</strong> extent of his love :<br />

" Simon, son of<br />

" Jonas, lovest thou me more than <strong>the</strong>se * *'<br />

Peter, now taught <strong>by</strong> his misconduct, would<br />

make no extraordinary professions ;<br />

" Yea,<br />

*'<br />

Lord," says he, " thou knowest that I love<br />

*'<br />

<strong>the</strong>e.*' He had indeed displayed a contrary<br />

conduct ; but he appeals to Christ, as <strong>the</strong><br />

searcher of hearts, respecting <strong>the</strong> present state<br />

of his affections. Our Lord, <strong>the</strong>refore, shows<br />

him, that he still numbered him among his disciples^,<br />

<strong>by</strong> assigning him a test for proving <strong>the</strong><br />

sincerity of his<br />

love, " Feed my sheep/'<br />

As <strong>the</strong> R. appears, upon all occasions, greatly<br />

edified <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> sayings of <strong>the</strong> Fa<strong>the</strong>rs, I will<br />

produce him a few of <strong>the</strong>ir observations upon<br />

this .knotty point.<br />
