sin *." Papists, <strong>the</strong>n, with <strong>the</strong>ir frequent<br />

masses, are <strong>the</strong> kinsmen of <strong>the</strong>se hea<strong>the</strong>n, who<br />

expect to be heard in prayer for <strong>the</strong>ir much<br />

speaking ; <strong>and</strong> doubtless <strong>the</strong>y are equally successful.<br />

The <strong>scripture</strong>s, likewise, as plainly show <strong>the</strong><br />

Lord's Supper to be a service of commemoration.<br />

The symbols of his body <strong>and</strong> blood, in<br />

this ordinance, are intended to direct <strong>the</strong> faith<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Christian to that offering, which has already<br />

completely satisfied divine justice for sin ;<br />

Do this in remembrance of me ;<br />

for as often<br />

as ye eat this bread, <strong>and</strong> drink this cup, ye<br />

do shew <strong>the</strong> Lord's death till he come." If<br />

<strong>the</strong> R. consult <strong>the</strong> Fa<strong>the</strong>rs, he will find this view<br />

of <strong>the</strong> eucharist very extensively inculcated :<br />

" It is not," says Eulogius of Alex<strong>and</strong>ria,<br />

<strong>the</strong> offering of different sacrifices, but <strong>the</strong><br />

" commemoration of a sacrifice once offered f."<br />

" He comm<strong>and</strong>ed us," says Eusebius, " to<br />

" offer to God continually <strong>the</strong> remembrance,<br />

" instead of <strong>the</strong> sacrifice |."<br />
