56 POPERY CONDEMNED BY<br />

" bishop of Rome." From <strong>the</strong>se words, an<br />

impartial reader would conclude, that <strong>the</strong> custom<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Romish Church was adopted <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Council as a pattern <strong>by</strong> which <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r Sees<br />

ought to be regulated.<br />

But <strong>the</strong> R. says, " These<br />

" words can bear no o<strong>the</strong>r sense but this, that<br />

*'<br />

'twas <strong>the</strong> custom of <strong>the</strong> Bishop of Rome to<br />

*•<br />

invest <strong>the</strong> Bishop of Alex<strong>and</strong>ria with a juris-<br />

*'<br />

diction over <strong>the</strong>se provinces *." The following<br />

words of <strong>the</strong> canon sufficiently illustrate<br />

<strong>the</strong><br />

of <strong>the</strong> metropolitan bishop." Will <strong>the</strong> R.<br />

of Rome to share his authority with <strong>the</strong>se<br />

also ; <strong>and</strong> how <strong>the</strong> Council, in fixing <strong>the</strong> privileges<br />

of <strong>the</strong>se churches, secured <strong>the</strong> rights of<br />

metropolitan bishops,<br />

extensive supremacy <br />

without hinting at a more<br />

Perhaps he does not know, that his sense of<br />

this canon is opposed <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fa<strong>the</strong>rs. I will,<br />

<strong>the</strong>refore, introduce him to Rufinus, an Italian<br />

clergyman, who lived a short time after <strong>the</strong><br />

Council of Nice, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>refore ought to know<br />

both <strong>the</strong> meaning of this canon,<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> ancient<br />

practice of <strong>the</strong> Church of Rome, as well as <strong>the</strong> R.<br />
