by the Church is not " non est fides habenda
" hereticis/' but " -non est fides servanda here-

and the latter would be translated by
a boy at the grammar-school, in the usual way.
Of the real existence of this doctrine in the
Church, and likewise of the mode of expression,
the following authorities may convince him.
" Fides hereticis data servanda non est : Faith

given to heretics is not to be kept *."

" That the safe-conduct granted by princes in
