POPKRY CONDEMNED BY<br />

turn his attention entirely to <strong>the</strong> Lord God of Elijah<br />

With <strong>the</strong> promise of a double portion of<br />

that<br />

spirit with which Elijah had been endowed,<br />

he imagined himself competent to perform <strong>the</strong><br />

same works ; <strong>and</strong> hence this imitation of his<br />

conduct. But let <strong>the</strong> R. tell us, whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong><br />

future miracles of Elisha were performed <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

assistance of this mantle, or <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> spirit of E-<br />

lijah.<br />

He next produces <strong>the</strong> history of <strong>the</strong> revival<br />

of a dead man, <strong>by</strong> touching <strong>the</strong> bones of Elisha,<br />

<strong>and</strong> adds, " Would <strong>the</strong> Ex. permit this man,<br />

**<br />

who was raised from <strong>the</strong> dead, or his friendar<br />

•*<br />

to have some respect for <strong>the</strong>se venerable bones<br />

*'<br />

to which he was so much indebted *."<br />

When he can show us, that Israel took up<br />

<strong>the</strong> bones of <strong>the</strong> prophet <strong>and</strong> worshipped <strong>the</strong>m,<br />

this will be acknowledged as a precedent for <strong>the</strong><br />

Ppish doctrine of relics.<br />

His last proof is taken from <strong>the</strong> Acts of <strong>the</strong><br />

Apostles :<br />

" God wrought special niracles <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

''<br />

h<strong>and</strong> of Paid^ so that even <strong>the</strong>re were brought<br />

*'<br />

from his body h<strong>and</strong>kerchiefs <strong>and</strong> aprons^ <strong>and</strong><br />

*'<br />

**<br />

*'<br />

<strong>the</strong> diseases departed from <strong>the</strong>m <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> wicked<br />

spirits went out of <strong>the</strong>m. If one of <strong>the</strong>se<br />

h<strong>and</strong>kerchiefs or aprons, had relieved <strong>the</strong> Ex.<br />

*'<br />

from a mortal disease, would he have thrown<br />

*'<br />

it aside to rot would he shew no sort of re-<br />

" spect<br />
