When <strong>the</strong> R. has explained <strong>the</strong> meaning of<br />

St. Augustine <strong>and</strong> Athanasius, I may perhaps<br />

extend his acquaintance with <strong>the</strong>se arrant Papists.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> mean time, <strong>the</strong> reader is at liberty<br />

to reject <strong>the</strong> infallibility ; for he has assured<br />

us, that " <strong>the</strong>re is nothing taught in <strong>the</strong> Church<br />

of Christ but truth."<br />

When <strong>the</strong> R. produced his proofs for <strong>the</strong> infaUibility,<br />

he has entirely overlooked <strong>the</strong> difficulties<br />

with which it is attended. Before bidding<br />

him adieu upon this subject, I will <strong>the</strong>refore<br />

present him with a small addition to <strong>the</strong>se which<br />

have been already proposed, that he may have<br />

an opportunity of confirming <strong>the</strong> faithful in his<br />

next publication.<br />

Infallibility, he says, is claimed <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> body<br />

of <strong>the</strong> pastors united to this head. In order,<br />

<strong>the</strong>n, to preserve this prerogative in <strong>the</strong> Church,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Pope <strong>and</strong> his clergy ought to be Continually<br />

in Council ; because, according to his doctrine,<br />

'<strong>the</strong> promise of <strong>the</strong> presence of Christ <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

.ssistance of <strong>the</strong> Spirit to teach <strong>the</strong>m all truth,<br />

belongs to <strong>the</strong>m conjunctly. On this principle,<br />

<strong>the</strong> di;:solut:on of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Council must remove <strong>the</strong><br />

presence
