SCRIPTURE AND THE FATHERS. 279<br />

sed, if it be received with thanksgiving : For<br />

*'<br />

it is sanctified <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> word of God <strong>and</strong><br />

" prayer." The word of God authorises <strong>the</strong><br />

use of it ; <strong>and</strong> it is consecrated or set apart <strong>by</strong><br />

prayer <strong>and</strong> thanksgiving. In <strong>the</strong> same manner,<br />

St. Jerome informs us, consecration takes place<br />

in <strong>the</strong> Lord's supper :<br />

" Upon <strong>the</strong> prayer of <strong>the</strong><br />

*'<br />

pres<strong>by</strong>ters," says he, '« <strong>the</strong> body <strong>and</strong> blood<br />

*'<br />

of Christ is made *."<br />

The Popish view of <strong>the</strong> consecration of <strong>the</strong><br />

elements is intended as a preparatory introduction<br />

to <strong>the</strong> gr<strong>and</strong> doctrine of transubstantiation,<br />

which <strong>the</strong> Romish Church has grafted upon <strong>the</strong><br />

plain <strong>and</strong> simple ordinance of <strong>the</strong> Supper. This<br />

<strong>the</strong> Council of Trent have defined to be, " a<br />

*'<br />

wonderful conversion of <strong>the</strong> w^hole substance<br />

" of <strong>the</strong> bread in this holy sacrament into <strong>the</strong><br />

" whole substance of <strong>the</strong> body of Christ, <strong>and</strong> of<br />

" <strong>the</strong> whole substance of <strong>the</strong> wine into his blood,<br />

" <strong>the</strong> species or accidents of <strong>the</strong> wine onlv re-<br />

" maining f :" And this <strong>the</strong> Roman Catechism<br />

aiHrms to be <strong>the</strong> very same body which was born<br />

of <strong>the</strong> virgin,<br />

<strong>and</strong> now sits in heaven at <strong>the</strong> right<br />

h<strong>and</strong> of <strong>the</strong> Fa<strong>the</strong>r J.<br />

A similar view of transubstantiation<br />

is given <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> R. :<br />

'*<br />

In <strong>the</strong> pub-<br />

**<br />

lie sacrifice of <strong>the</strong> mass," says he, " J. Christ<br />

*'<br />

was believed to be really present, <strong>and</strong> offered<br />

'*<br />

up to his eternal fa<strong>the</strong>r under <strong>the</strong> appearance<br />
