In <strong>the</strong> Council of Jerusalem, mentioned in<br />

<strong>the</strong> fifteenth chapter of <strong>the</strong> Acts,<br />

<strong>the</strong> R. thinks<br />

he has found ano<strong>the</strong>r strong proof of <strong>the</strong> supremacy<br />

of Peter.<br />

This Council was assembled<br />

to decide, whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> Gentile converts should<br />

be circumcised, <strong>and</strong> keep <strong>the</strong> law of Moses.<br />

" The controversy," says he, " was brought<br />

" before <strong>the</strong> apostles <strong>and</strong> priests at Jerusalem,<br />

" <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>re, with <strong>the</strong> concurrence of <strong>the</strong> chief<br />

" pastor Peter, it vi'as finally settled *." This<br />

he considers as a plain statement of facts ; <strong>and</strong><br />

he charges Mr Stanser with misrepresentation<br />

in saying, that <strong>the</strong> controversy was discussed <strong>by</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> apostles <strong>and</strong> elders, <strong>and</strong> <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong>m decided :<br />

" decision had been adopted <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> Council,<br />
