This, it must be confessed, is an extraordinary<br />

passage, both in its sentiment <strong>and</strong> composition.<br />

It must be gratifying to <strong>the</strong> R. to reflect,<br />

that <strong>the</strong><br />

identical weapons which Deists employ<br />

against <strong>the</strong> Christian religion are used <strong>by</strong> himself<br />

against <strong>the</strong> doctrines of <strong>the</strong> Reformation. In<br />

collecting this catalogue of stale objections to<br />

<strong>the</strong> perfection of <strong>scripture</strong>, instead of refuting<br />

<strong>the</strong> doctrine of Protestants, he has erazed <strong>the</strong><br />

very foundation of all Popish faith. How does<br />

he account for <strong>the</strong> perfect preservation of oral<br />

tradition <strong>by</strong> a Church, which has lost a part<br />

of<br />

<strong>the</strong> written word of God Does he think <strong>the</strong><br />

simple faithful vvill be convinced <strong>and</strong> edified <strong>by</strong><br />

informing <strong>the</strong>m., that <strong>the</strong>-<strong>scripture</strong>s, which were<br />

constantly read in <strong>the</strong> Church, <strong>and</strong> <strong>by</strong> individuals<br />

daily in every part of <strong>the</strong> world, have<br />

been partially lost ; but oral traditions never<br />

met with selfish men to corrupt <strong>the</strong>m, nor careless<br />

ones to neglect<br />

<strong>the</strong>m, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>refore remain<br />

pure<br />
