The apostle John, he thinks, was in so high<br />

esteem with <strong>the</strong> Saviour, as not to need <strong>the</strong> intercession<br />

of angels. Had he been much acquainted<br />

with <strong>the</strong> nature of <strong>the</strong> gospel, he would<br />

have known that <strong>the</strong> communications of divine<br />

favour never originate in <strong>the</strong> personal qualifications<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Christian. These, an apostle assures<br />

us, proceed from <strong>the</strong> free love of God to<br />

men as sinners, <strong>and</strong> not saints :<br />

" God, who is<br />

rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith<br />

" he loved us, even when we were dead in sins,<br />

hath quickened us toge<strong>the</strong>r with Christ : <strong>by</strong><br />

*'<br />

grace ye are saved *." If quickening, <strong>the</strong>n,<br />

or holy qualifications, originate in divine love,<br />

how can <strong>the</strong>y procure divine favour We can<br />

easily conceive how one gift of God may follow<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r ; but hew one should procure ano<strong>the</strong>r,<br />

<strong>the</strong> R. will find it hard to demonstrate. The<br />

same apostle gives us a very different view of<br />

<strong>the</strong> economy of grace :<br />

" He that spared not<br />

^* his own Son, but delivered him up for us all,<br />

how shall he not with him zhofreeli/ give us<br />

* all things t"<br />
