<strong>the</strong> fourth day, <strong>the</strong> Pope deigned to admit him<br />

to an audience,<br />

at <strong>the</strong> intercession of <strong>the</strong> Countess<br />

Matilda, to whom this godly Pope could<br />

deny no favour ; because he always found her<br />

equally condescending. He was <strong>the</strong>n absolved<br />

from th;^ sentence on <strong>the</strong> following conditions :<br />

" That he should attend a general Council ap-<br />

" pointed <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pope, to which <strong>the</strong> German<br />

him : That if he was deprived of his imperial<br />

" should lieartily acquiesce, <strong>and</strong> that, whe<strong>the</strong>r<br />

" deposed or restored, he should never seek to<br />

" be revenged for any thing done against him :<br />

That till his cause be finally decided, he<br />

should remain as a private person, <strong>by</strong> laying<br />

aside every mark of royalty, <strong>and</strong> desisting<br />

from all acts of government ; <strong>and</strong> also con-<br />

senting, that every person should be acquit-<br />

ted before God <strong>and</strong> man of <strong>the</strong>ir oaths of<br />

fideUty to him : That, if he were restored,<br />

" he should be always subject to <strong>the</strong> Pope, <strong>and</strong><br />

" obedient to his orders, <strong>and</strong> employ all his<br />

power, in concurrence with him, to maintain<br />

" <strong>the</strong> laws <strong>and</strong> decrees of <strong>the</strong> Church," &c.<br />
