took <strong>the</strong> alarm, <strong>and</strong> exclaimed against his procedure<br />

as an open violation of <strong>the</strong> canons.<br />

knew that it would be in vain for him to<br />

appeal to <strong>the</strong> Council of Sardica m vindication<br />

of his conduct, as that Council had never been<br />

acknowledged in Africa ; <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>refore he<br />

judged it a most prudent expedient to palm its<br />

decrees upon <strong>the</strong>se bishops, as <strong>the</strong> canons of<br />

Nice. To carry on this imposture, Faustinus,<br />

a bishop, with Philippus <strong>and</strong> Assellus, both<br />

pres<strong>by</strong>ters, were dispatched into Africa. In<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir instructions,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y were comm<strong>and</strong>ed to require<br />

of <strong>the</strong> African bishops an observance of<br />

<strong>the</strong>se canons ; <strong>and</strong> also, that <strong>the</strong>y would not<br />

communicate with Urbanus, unless<br />

he received<br />

Apiarius as formerly.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> arrival of <strong>the</strong>se legates, a Council<br />

was immediately called, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir instructions<br />

read. These canons were next compared with<br />

many copies of <strong>the</strong> canons of Nice, to which<br />

<strong>the</strong>y were found not to bear <strong>the</strong> most distant resemblance.<br />

The legates, however, continuing<br />

to' affirm,<br />

with <strong>the</strong> most consummate effrontery,<br />

that <strong>the</strong> canons produced <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong>m were genuine,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Council agreed to observe <strong>the</strong>m till a more<br />

particular inquiry should be made. But, as<br />

this was an affair of general concernm.ent, <strong>and</strong><br />

only a few bishops present, <strong>the</strong>y agreed to call
