To this bishop's successor, Pope Gregory<br />

wrote a letter upon <strong>the</strong> same subject ; in which<br />

he says, " Whoever calls himself universal bi-<br />

shop, or desires to be so called in <strong>the</strong> pride of<br />

his heart, is <strong>the</strong> forerunner of Antichrist.*'<br />

Nor did he reject this title with less indignation,<br />

when given to himself <strong>by</strong> Eulogius of Alex<strong>and</strong>ria.
