in <strong>the</strong> 1 6th chapter of Mat<strong>the</strong>w, " I will give<br />

" unto <strong>the</strong>e,'* says <strong>the</strong> Saviour to Peter, '' <strong>the</strong><br />

" keys of <strong>the</strong> kingdom of heaven : <strong>and</strong> whatso-<br />

*'<br />

ever thou shalt bind on earth, shall be bound<br />

" in heaven ; <strong>and</strong> whatsoever thou shalt loose<br />

*'<br />

en earth, shall be loosed in heaven.'* The<br />

keys, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> power to bind <strong>and</strong> loose, are synonymous<br />

expressions ; <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> latter, he will<br />

scarcely deny, was given to all <strong>the</strong> apostles.<br />
