mode of reasoning, I am afraid, would hurt cur<br />

feelings ; for though we be much addicted to<br />

argumentation, we are far from being attached<br />

to that species of it which is most frequently<br />

used <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> Romish Church, <strong>and</strong> which logicians<br />

have learnedly denominated " argumentum<br />

ad hominem." Besides, we are not obstinate<br />

heretics : If <strong>the</strong> R. would solve our doubts, <strong>by</strong><br />

directing his arguments to our underst<strong>and</strong>ing,<br />

it would serve <strong>the</strong> same purpose, <strong>and</strong> perhaps<br />

prepare <strong>the</strong> way for our return into <strong>the</strong> bosom<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Church. To afford him an opportunity<br />

of shewing his zeal for <strong>the</strong> instruction of disbelieving<br />

Protestants,<br />

I will mention a few of those<br />

reasons which have induced us to reject transubstantiation<br />

; <strong>and</strong> when <strong>the</strong>se are answered, a<br />

more comprehensive view of <strong>the</strong> subject may be<br />

taken.<br />

According to <strong>the</strong> R., <strong>the</strong>re remains only <strong>the</strong><br />

appearance<br />

of bread <strong>and</strong> wine in <strong>the</strong> eucharist,<br />

but <strong>the</strong> real substance is <strong>the</strong> body <strong>and</strong> blood<br />

of Christ, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>refore, we are not to consider<br />

<strong>the</strong> eye as a pi*r)per judge in this part of<br />

religion. I perfectly agree with him, that<br />

we are apt to be deceived <strong>by</strong> appearances ;<br />

<strong>and</strong><br />

that trusting to <strong>the</strong> eye-sight<br />

in religion may be<br />

attended with dangerous consequences. But<br />

perhaps some of <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r senses may be more<br />

useful
