I have no intention to declare <strong>the</strong> <strong>scripture</strong>s<br />

entirely free from obscurity to us at present.<br />

Many future events, of which <strong>the</strong> prophets<br />

have spoken, are yet little understood <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Church.<br />

There are also in <strong>the</strong> <strong>scripture</strong>s many"<br />

allusions to customs <strong>and</strong> transactions, which are<br />

now totally unknov;n. But <strong>the</strong>se can constitute<br />

no objection to <strong>the</strong>ir sufficiency as a rule of faith<br />

<strong>and</strong> practice. If <strong>the</strong> R. can shew any obscurity<br />

in <strong>the</strong> statem.ent v/hich <strong>the</strong>y give of <strong>the</strong><br />

doctrines of <strong>the</strong> gospel,<br />

or <strong>the</strong> precepts of morahty,<br />

we may perhaps' be induced to afford him<br />

a far<strong>the</strong>r hearing. Till <strong>the</strong>n, he must permit<br />

Protestants to adhere to <strong>the</strong> <strong>scripture</strong>s.<br />

That a diversity of opinion respecting <strong>the</strong><br />

meaning of many passages of <strong>scripture</strong> subsists<br />

among Protestants, will be freely admitted. But<br />
