in his Ecclesiastical History :<br />

as in <strong>the</strong><br />

that <strong>the</strong> Bishop of Egypt, like<br />

<strong>the</strong> Bishop of Rome, have <strong>the</strong> care of <strong>the</strong><br />

" suburbicary cUurches *."<br />

This testimony of Rufinus <strong>the</strong> R. has thought<br />

fit to overlook entirelv ; but to shovi^ that he has<br />

given <strong>the</strong> genuine meaning of <strong>the</strong> canon,<br />

he appeals<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Council of Chalcedon, where he<br />

thinks a complete confirmation of it may be<br />

found "<br />

; The commencement of this canon of<br />

<strong>the</strong> .Council of Nice," says he, " does not<br />

appear in printed books ; but 'tis given <strong>by</strong> a<br />

Council of equal authority, that of Chalcedon,<br />

in 451. 'Tis thus cited in <strong>the</strong> 16th<br />

action <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bishop Paschasius :<br />

The R. must have judged his readers very<br />

ignorant of Church-history indeed, when he<br />

ventured even to mention <strong>the</strong> Council<br />

to<br />

of Chalcedon.<br />

When he said, that <strong>the</strong> canon was cited<br />

in this form <strong>by</strong> Paschasius,<br />

why did he not add,<br />
