66 POPtRY CONDEMNED BY<br />

play-actors ; all, without doubt, for <strong>the</strong> convenience<br />

<strong>and</strong> comfort of <strong>the</strong>se venerable fa<strong>the</strong>rs,<br />

who burnt John Huss <strong>and</strong> Jerome of Prague,<br />

for believing <strong>and</strong> teaching <strong>the</strong> doctrine of <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>scripture</strong>s about <strong>the</strong> way to heaven.<br />

As a far<strong>the</strong>r proof of <strong>the</strong> supremacy of <strong>the</strong><br />

Pope, <strong>the</strong> R. says, " In his letter to <strong>the</strong>m pre-<br />

" lates Damasus twice calls <strong>the</strong>m his most ho-<br />

" noured children *."<br />

That Damasus, a man who arrived at <strong>the</strong><br />

popedom through <strong>the</strong> murder of 1 60 citizens,<br />

whose arrogance v/as unbounded, <strong>and</strong> v/hose<br />

table vied with <strong>the</strong> emperor's in luxury, might<br />

bishops.<br />

*'<br />

Ephesus, held in <strong>the</strong> year 431, 'twas affirmed<br />

**<br />

without a contradiction, or even without <strong>the</strong><br />

*'<br />

least motion of surprise, that Peter was <strong>the</strong><br />

*'<br />

head of <strong>the</strong> apostles, <strong>and</strong> Pope Celestine, (<strong>the</strong>n<br />

*'<br />

at Rome), <strong>the</strong> head of <strong>the</strong> Council f.'*<br />

It has been already shewn, in what sense <strong>the</strong><br />

primacy of Peter <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pope was understood<br />

<strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> primitive Church. This can, <strong>the</strong>refore,<br />

be no proof of an authoritative supremacy.<br />

*^ In <strong>the</strong> seventh Synod held at Nice," says<br />

<strong>the</strong><br />
