When <strong>the</strong> Christians were accused of not sacrificing<br />

for <strong>the</strong> Roman Emperors, Tertullian<br />

rephed, that tlieir religion knew no propitiatory<br />

sacrifice :<br />

" We do not/' says he, " sacrifice<br />

for o<strong>the</strong>rs, because we do it not for our-<br />

'*<br />

selves *,"<br />

The Fa<strong>the</strong>rs, indeed, frequently call <strong>the</strong> eucharist<br />

a sacrifice ; but <strong>the</strong>y leave us in no uncertainty<br />

concerning its nature. They considered<br />

it<br />

merely as a figurative representation of <strong>the</strong><br />

death of Christ, <strong>and</strong> an offering of gratitude to<br />

God for his goodness<br />

''<br />

: Diligently consider,"<br />

says Ephrem Syrus, " how Christ, taking <strong>the</strong><br />

bread in his h<strong>and</strong>s, blessed <strong>and</strong> brake it, for<br />

a figure of his immaculate body ;<br />

<strong>and</strong> he also<br />

blessed <strong>and</strong> gave <strong>the</strong> cup to his disciples, for<br />

a figure of his precious blood f."<br />

" The bread," says Tertullian, " which he<br />

took <strong>and</strong> distributed to his disciples, he made<br />

his body, saying. This is mij hody^ that is, <strong>the</strong><br />

figure of my body |."<br />

" We are not A<strong>the</strong>ists," says Justin Martyr,<br />

Vv'e worship <strong>the</strong> Maker of all things, who ,<br />

needs nei<strong>the</strong>r blood, libations, nor incense,<br />

v/ith <strong>the</strong> word of prayer <strong>and</strong> thanksgiving.<br />

And we are persuaded, that he needs no material<br />

oblation from men ||," And likewise.<br />
