reverence for religion, <strong>the</strong>y have been productive<br />

of <strong>the</strong> most stupendous miracles in behalf of<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir worshippers,<br />

<strong>and</strong> for <strong>the</strong> vindication of <strong>the</strong><br />

truth. Had <strong>the</strong> reader only faith to believe, he<br />

might be told of <strong>the</strong> wondrous cures performed<br />

<strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy Thorn ; how <strong>the</strong> bones of St. Gervaise<br />

<strong>and</strong> St. Prolaise cured an old blind butcher;<br />

how <strong>the</strong> relics of <strong>the</strong> saints have cast out devils,<br />

<strong>and</strong> sent <strong>the</strong>m yelling into <strong>the</strong> Red Sea in myriads<br />

; <strong>and</strong> many o<strong>the</strong>r strange events, equally<br />

true <strong>and</strong> marvellous.<br />

But as <strong>the</strong> present design<br />

is to give a just view of Popish relics, <strong>and</strong> not<br />

to write <strong>the</strong>ir histor}^, I will mention only one<br />

fact, which v/ill beget admiration even in Protestant<br />

heretics.<br />

Prince Christopher, of <strong>the</strong> family of <strong>the</strong> dukes<br />

of Radzecil, having gone a pilgrimage to Rome<br />

to kiss his Holiness' toe, received, a:s a reward<br />

of his piety, a b)x of very precious relics.<br />

These,<br />

on his return home, becaine <strong>the</strong> consolation of<br />

<strong>the</strong> aillicted, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> terror of <strong>the</strong> devil. Even<br />

<strong>the</strong> most stubborn of those evil spirits, over<br />

whom ordinary relics possessed no influence, acknowledged<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir virtue in bellowings of submission.<br />

Scarcely had a few months illustrated <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

power, when some monks, with<br />

humble intreaty,<br />

requested <strong>the</strong> use of <strong>the</strong>m for <strong>the</strong> benefit of<br />

a man into whom <strong>the</strong> devil had entered. As<br />

this foul fiend stuck to his new habitation with<br />

<strong>the</strong>
