that it was also received <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> Council <br />

Though <strong>the</strong> Pope's legates produced it in this<br />

form, <strong>the</strong> Council were far from receiving it as<br />

genuine. On <strong>the</strong> contrary, <strong>the</strong> canons of this<br />

very Council have completely destroyed all Popish<br />

claims of supremacy ; as a short view of<br />

that part of <strong>the</strong>ir transactions to which <strong>the</strong> R,<br />

refers will completely show.<br />

The bishop of Rome, <strong>by</strong> residing at<br />

<strong>the</strong> seat<br />

of government, had acquired considerable influence.<br />

On this account, a certain degree of<br />

deference had been generally paid him <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

surrounding bishops. In course of time, this<br />

respect began to be viewed as an acknowledgement<br />

of his superiority ; <strong>and</strong> he had subjected<br />

<strong>the</strong> neighbouring Sees to his jurisdiction. But,<br />

in extending his authority, he met with a formidable<br />

opponent in <strong>the</strong> bishop of Constantinople.<br />

When that city was made <strong>the</strong> head of<br />

<strong>the</strong> empire, <strong>the</strong> latter employed his influence to<br />

increase <strong>the</strong> power of his See ; <strong>and</strong>, <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

time in which <strong>the</strong> Council of Chalcedon convened,<br />

he had succeeded so far as to extend his<br />

jurisdiction over <strong>the</strong> Patriarchate of Aniioch.<br />

This success, he was conscious, had proceeded<br />

only from his influence at court ;<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>refore,<br />

though o custom had for a considerable time sane-<br />

tioned his -authority, he was desirous of placing<br />

it upon a more stable basis. To efi:'ectuate this<br />
