With all due deference to Mr Burke's opinion,
he ought to have possessed either a little more
knowledge or candour, before he pretended to
discuss this point. He ought to have known,
that to keep no faith with heretics has for a long
time been a maxim faithfully believed and practised
in the Romish Church ; and also, that the
phrase, which he has either ignorantly or cunningly
produced, does not exhibit the doctnne
of the Church of Rome in its true colours. Indecent
as the expression of this cardinal may be,
it is modesty itself when compared with the conduct
of the Council of Constance, and many
