With all due deference to Mr Burke's opinion,<br />

he ought to have possessed ei<strong>the</strong>r a little more<br />

knowledge or c<strong>and</strong>our, before he pretended to<br />

discuss this point. He ought to have known,<br />

that to keep no faith with heretics has for a long<br />

time been a maxim faithfully believed <strong>and</strong> practised<br />

in <strong>the</strong> Romish Church ; <strong>and</strong> also, that <strong>the</strong><br />

phrase, which he has ei<strong>the</strong>r ignorantly or cunningly<br />

produced, does not exhibit <strong>the</strong> doctnne<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Church of Rome in its true colours. Indecent<br />

as <strong>the</strong> expression of this cardinal may be,<br />

it is modesty itself when compared with <strong>the</strong> conduct<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Council of Constance, <strong>and</strong> many<br />
