also exfensive indulgences to all persons, who<br />

would gird up <strong>the</strong>ir loins for <strong>the</strong> destruction of<br />

heretics ; with many o<strong>the</strong>r particulars equally<br />

descriptive of <strong>the</strong> spirit of <strong>the</strong> Romish religion.<br />

To this, a multitude of similar declarations of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Church might be added, but at present, I<br />

presume,<br />

<strong>the</strong>m superfluous.<br />

But <strong>the</strong> Romish Church has not been satisfied<br />

with simple decrees. Heretics are a species of<br />

animals, against which Popes have always entertained<br />

<strong>the</strong> most rooted antipathy. To procure,<br />

<strong>the</strong>refore,<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir utter excision, it was no unusual<br />

thing for <strong>the</strong>m to exhibit <strong>the</strong> dearest consolations<br />

of religion as <strong>the</strong> reward of those who<br />

would engage in this laudable undertaking.<br />

Croisades were proclaimed ; <strong>by</strong> which, all good<br />

Papists were exhorted to aim at <strong>the</strong> destruction<br />

of such noxious vermine ; <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> gates of<br />

heaven opened to thieves, robbers, murderers,<br />

<strong>and</strong> sinners of all descriptions, who would only<br />

embrue <strong>the</strong>ir h<strong>and</strong>s in <strong>the</strong> blood of a heretic :<br />

And yet <strong>the</strong> R. has <strong>the</strong> audacity to say, " That<br />

persecution. Why not tell us of innumerable<br />
