SCRIITURL AND IHE FATHERS. 63
he adds, " say they were commanded by the
'*
Pope, if they acknowledged no authority in
''
him * '*
This is another specimen of the R.'s candour
and accurate acquaintance with antiquity. If he
can produce one ancient author who affirms, that
the emperor called this Council at the commandment
of the Pope, I will agree to his assertion.
In the mean time,
let me refer him to a few authors
who have given a very different account.
According to Socrates Scholasticus t and Sozomen
this J,
Council was called by the emperor
alone. Even Theodoret, whom the R. has quoted
in proof of his assertion, affirms the sami
thing ||.
This he would have seen, had he attended
more to the language of that historian,
and less to these Popish notes which have been
added to him to pervert his meaning. If he look
also into the letter, which the bishops of that
Council wrote to the emperor, he will find them
referring to his mandate, as the cause of their
meeting. Should he still refer to his quotation
from the bishops' letter to pope Damasus, respecting
the summons which they had received
to meet at Rome, I must tell him, that he has
reversed their language. In my copy of it by
Binius, as zealous a Papist as the R., these bishops
say,
" that Damasus summoned them to
C 2 " meet
