POPERY CONDEMNED BY<br />

SO far from making any reference concerning<br />

him to Celestine, deposed him from his office,<br />

<strong>and</strong> cast him out of <strong>the</strong> church, as <strong>the</strong> R. maysee<br />

<strong>by</strong> consulting <strong>the</strong> very next chapter of Evagrius,<br />

that accurate historian :<br />

" John <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

" bishops of his party are separated from holy<br />

communion, <strong>and</strong> from all sacerdotal authori-<br />

'•<br />

ty." He might employ his time to excellent<br />

advantage, in furnishing <strong>the</strong> world with a new<br />

copy of <strong>the</strong> works of <strong>the</strong>se ancient writers.<br />

That is<br />

a work for which he appears to be very<br />

w^ll qualified. He is a greater adept at framing<br />

an original than making translations ; <strong>and</strong> he<br />

seems also to know^ that had <strong>the</strong> Fa<strong>the</strong>rs composed<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir works in <strong>the</strong> nineteenth century,<br />

when <strong>Popery</strong>, in <strong>the</strong> decrepitude of old age,<br />

required many props to support it, <strong>the</strong>y would<br />

have written very differently from what <strong>the</strong>y did<br />

in <strong>the</strong> days of <strong>the</strong>ir ignorance.<br />

As yet, we have only taken a view of what<br />

<strong>the</strong> Fa<strong>the</strong>rs have not said respecting Popish supremacy<br />

; we may now observe what <strong>the</strong>y have<br />

actually taught. This must be pleasing to <strong>the</strong><br />

R., whose heart is refreshed <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> very names<br />

of <strong>the</strong>se ancient writers. We may begin with<br />

<strong>the</strong> decisions of <strong>the</strong> Council of Sardica, which<br />

was held in <strong>the</strong> year 347.<br />

By <strong>the</strong> canons of this assembly, at which a<br />

hundred Western bishops were present, it was<br />

agreed, " That if any bishop shall think him-<br />
