have never failed to afford <strong>the</strong>m abundant<br />

£Cope for <strong>the</strong> most outrageous squabblings *.<br />

In defence of <strong>the</strong> doctrine of infallibility,<br />

<strong>the</strong><br />

R. saysj that he does not pretend to introduce<br />

<strong>the</strong> Fa<strong>the</strong>rs. " They vi^ere all arrant Papists,"<br />

says he, ^^ <strong>the</strong>ir testimony in favour of <strong>Popery</strong><br />

would be inadmissible." Had he pleased, he<br />

could have assigned a much Ijiore substantial<br />

cause. They Ave re utter strangers to this pretension<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Romish Church, <strong>and</strong> knew of<br />

no infallibility beyond <strong>the</strong> testimony of God in<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>scripture</strong>s. Could <strong>the</strong>y have afforded him<br />

any help, he would have embraced it most cordially.<br />

Notwithst<strong>and</strong>ing his pretended modesty,<br />

he accordingly produces a quotation from St.<br />

Augustine, to shev/ that <strong>the</strong> testimony of <strong>the</strong><br />

Church is<br />

<strong>the</strong> onlv foundation of our behef in<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>scripture</strong>s. The reader will find this point<br />

discussed in <strong>the</strong> following chapter, to vvhich it<br />

more properly belongs. At present, I would<br />

furiously upon many points, worthy to be recorded. A-<br />

mong o<strong>the</strong>rs, <strong>the</strong>re was at one time a rancorous contention<br />

amongst learned divines, whe<strong>the</strong>r any of <strong>the</strong> Eucharist,<br />

<strong>by</strong> passing into <strong>the</strong> intestines, was converted into<br />

excrement. One party maintained <strong>the</strong> affirmative ; but<br />

this was strenuously opposed <strong>by</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r, who, to testify<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir abhorrence of such unwholesome doctrine, dignified<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir adversaries with <strong>the</strong> savoury appellation of T—dis^.
